Ssireum is a traditional Korean sport that was inscribed on the UNESCO intangible heritage list. The rule of ssireum is extremely simple. Rule number one, there are two players who wear different colored long fabric belts. Rule number two, a player who topple adversary will win. There was a renaissance of ssireum in the 1980s with joint star player Mr.Lee and Mr.Kang; however, people's attention has moved to western traditional sports and ssireum has lost its popularity.
In 2019, some ssireum players who have good appearance caught public eyes. It made a possibility of ssireum's resurrection. Considering the body shapes of K-pop boy group members, many Koreans prefer males who have a skinny body these days. Therefore, players who are much slimmer than bulky body players in the 1980s went viral. New and young ssireum fans started calling the attractive players as "ssireumdol" which is a combination of words "ssireum" and "K-pop idol".
Personally, I could not understand this phenomenon, because I can not find the attractions of them that much; however, one of my friends is really into the ssireumdol, so I can find the evidence of this movement nearby. The ssireum association keens to keep the resurrection of ssireum in 2020 with their aggressive promotion.
