나라 이름 앞에 The를 붙이는 경우 3가지

영어에는 a/an 그리고 the 이렇게 두가지 부정관사가 있다.

the은 특정한 무언가를 지칭하는 명사 앞에 쓰고, definite article이라 불린다.

a/an은 그렇지 않은 명사 앞에 쓰고, indefinite article이라고 불린다.

그리고 나라, 사람이름, 회사이름 등 대명사 앞에는 부정관사를 붙이지 않는다는 규칙이 있는데,

아래 3가지 경우에 해당하는 나라의 이름에는 the를 사용한다.

 

 

1. 나라이름에 일반 명사가 포함된 경우 일반명사 앞에 the를 사용한다.

• The Republic of the Niger
• Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
• The United Mexican States
• The Dominican Republic
• The Lao People's Democratic Republic

 

2. 나라이름에 of가 포함된 경우 나라이름 앞에 the를 사용한다.

• The Republic of Korea
• The Democratic People's Republic of Korea
• The United State of America
• The Kingdom of the Netherlands

 

3. 섬나라여서 나라 이름에 island가 포함된 경우 나라이름 앞에 the를 사용한다.

• The Cook Islands
• The Republic of the Marshall Islands
