Donald Trump tried to buy Greenland, in August 2019. The parliament of Denmark declined it and decided to keep its territory. Then Mr.Trump canceled his trip to Denmark.

Greenland is full of rare earth metals. No one can mine it right now since ice sheets are covering this country. However, ice sheets wouldn't permanently exist because the global temperature is increasing. There would be an opportunity to mine rare earth metals in the future.
The United States and China are trying to build economic ties with Greenland though grant and military facilities to take the opportunity to gather these metals from Greenland.
